It’s week 15 of the Kindness Club.
Thanks to all of you who have been reading and joining in on the weekly kindness prompts even if you are not posting or commenting.
Last week’s Kindness Club prompt was to hold the door open for someone.
Holding a door open for someone is a simple act that costs nothing to do and takes almost no time. It is an act of kindness that we can find an opportunity to do almost every day.
This week’s prompt is to do something nice for a neighbor.
There is a reason I chose this prompt for today.
Today is a Jewish fast day called the Ninth of Av. Aside from Yom Kippur it is the only other Jewish fast day that goes from sunset to sunset. It is a 25 hour fast with no eating and drinking.
Unlike Yom Kippur, it does not have stringent Sabbath like restrictions, (which explains how I am on the computer), although there are many other restrictions such as not wearing shoes made from leather and no bathing.
The Fast of the Ninth of Av commemorates the many tragedies that have befallen the Jewish nation on this date. The main tragedies being the destruction of the First and Second Temples, however there have been many others over the years.
The First Temple was destroyed as a consequence of the sins of idolatry, immorality and bloodshed. The Second Temple was destroyed because of baseless hatred.
I thought it fitting that today’s prompt would be one that fostered understanding, tolerance, respect and hopefully one that might lead to like or love.
An interpretation I read which I liked very much suggested that the opposite of baseless hatred is not free love but rather to learn to respect others and the fact that each person has a unique place in this world.
There is no better way to do that then to start with the people living near us.
So this week make it a point to do something nice for a neighbor. Maybe even meet a neighbor you don’t know. Be creative and remember for some people even a polite exchange of hellos can be the highlight of their day.
Come back on Sunday to link up your posts and pictures. (I will leave the McLinky up from Sunday till Sunday.)
If anyone who is not a blogger wants to join in please feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will put your story or photo up on my blog.
