Chewing Gum While Working Is Unprofessional

Cameron's gum ball machine

My husband is really going to like this post. But that’s because he can’t stand chewing gum at all. The smell makes him sick as does watching people chew it.

Sadly for him the rest of the family likes gum but we know better than to chew it in his presence. Most of the time that is.

My older boys know better than to chew gum in their father’s car. That’s because his sense of smell regarding gum is really sharp and the penalty for a a trace of chewing gum smell left in his car is no car use for them.

There is one point about gum chewing that both my husband and I agree about. Chewing gum while you are working with people is just simply unprofessional.

As my husband calls it, “the cow grazing look” is not the most attractive look. For me the deal breaker is dealing with the chomping noise coming out of someone’s mouth while they are trying to talk to you. Very distracting. Actually, it’s just yuck.

The other day while I was visiting my father in law in the hospital, the nurse giving out the medications did so while chomping away on her gum. I would have probably somehow overlooked the gum chewing had she had a friendly demeanor. But the “roll your eyes at every little request” along with the “cow grazing look” was not a winning combination. It just looked so unprofessional.

So does anyone else agree that chewing gum while working with people is unprofessional or is it just hubby and I who are weirdos?

I am me and also lots of other things like a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a daughter in law, a sister in law, a friend, an oncology nurse, a blogger, a life coach in training, an avid book reader, a chauffeur, a chef, a shopper, a maid and on some days a bit overwhelmed. On this blog I share my journey of striving to see the best in everyone and everything. Strive, because I don't always manage to. Yup, I am human. I would love to have you join me in learning lessons in positivity from life.

I’m with your man, I hate seeing people chewing gum, especially with their mouth open, I have been known to yell at people on the telly doing it. I dislike stepping in it and its a pain on clothing and in hair – yuck!

    1. Susie says:

He will like you very much then. One more to the weirdo side.

  2. JulieB says:

I confess I have taken to chewing gum after lunch when I am at work, as I have got addicted to that quick clean teeth feeling it gives. However, if I do have to speak to anyone at this point, I always discard it straight away, as you’re right, it does not really project a very professional image.

    1. Susie says:

I also like gun-there are just times for it and then there are times that aren’t.

  3. Jen says:

It’s horrible stuff. Yes, a quick chew after eating is good for your teeth, they say, but to keep chewing over and over, well it is very annoying as well as rude! It surprises me that more workplaces don’t have a rule about it. Jen.

    1. Susie says:

I lose interest in gun after I chew for a minute cause there is no more taste.

  4. Emma says:

Urgh! No, I completely agree with you. Gross at the best of time but completely unprofessional at work!!!

    1. Susie says:

My husband is so going to like all the people in the anti gum lobby lol.

  5. Bronagh says:

Oh, it’s not just you and your husband who think it’s unprofessional!

In my previous job in HR, I had the unpleasant task of interviewing a chap for an apprenticeship, he had sent in no fewer than 6 application forms so he really wanted to work for us, but he sat there and chewed gum through the entire interview. Had no clue how bad it looked.

    1. Susie says:

That is pathetic. I personally would have probably said something to him about it for the future.

  6. Ed says:

It is a peeve. But a stick of gum every once in a while is kind of nice.

    1. Susie says:

Am there with you. (But my gum chewing lasts a minute or two at the most.)

  7. devorah says:

you know what I think!! What about those annoying people who crack their gum, or whatever the hell it’s called when they make loud snapping noises with it?

    1. Susie says:

Actually I don’t. *scratches her head* You agree with my husband on something aside from the Mets? LOL

  8. I am with your hubbie on this one. Cant stand people chewing gum, especially when at work or trying to talk to them whim they are chewing away.

What if you can’t stand to speak to your boss because she smacked her gum in abdundance
